He also knows that he owes everything he has to the Lutece twins, and in his paranoia he begins to view them as a threat.Ĭomstock murders the twins by sabotaging their rip creation machine, but by this time they have become so used to a multidimensional existence that they simply refuse to die, maintaining their existence through sheer willpower. His wife's murder is just one of the many lies that Comstock must protect in order to maintain his status, credibility, and power. Ironically, his maid Daisy Fitzroy is the only witness, and in framing her for the murder he turns her into a fugitive and a rebel, inadvertently creating the Vox Populi movement. His wife's refusal to accept this foundling child drives Comstock into a rage, and he beats her to death. His science experiments and rip transportation have rendered him infertile, meaning he has to go back in time to steal his own infant daughter in order to have an heir. There are plenty of clues around to explain this, and its roots lie in the lies that Comstock has told in order to style himself as the great prophet. One question that then remains is why the Luteces, after giving Comstock the technology to build Columbia and open rips in reality to make it wealthy (I can't imagine where else they could have gotten their raw materials) decided to then turn on him and wipe him completely from existence. Father and daughter will remain together, because there is now nobody to take her away. The timelines all shuffle back into their original places, and after the closing credits we find the original Booker 1, haunted by faint memories of the events that will now never occur, surprised to hear his daughter Anna crying in the next room. This prevents Comstock from ever having existed, essentially wiping the entire city of Columbia from existence and preventing him from going back and abducting Elizabeth. In order to break the loop, she then drowns Booker 2 in the river where he was due to be baptised. This is not the first time Booker has been brought to Columbia - there are hints that he has been there over a hundred times, and that the corpse in the lighthouse, bearing the note reading "Don't fail us!", is a different Booker who failed in his mission.Īt the end of the game, Elizabeth uses her full dimensional-warping powers to find the point in space and time where Booker 2 decides to proceed with the baptism and thereby become Comstock. Booker 3 is the one who is brought to Columbia by the Luteces, the one who you control in the game. Comstock uses the Luteces to go back in time and take custody of Anna from Booker 1, which is when she loses her finger in the closing rip. Most of the pivotal events in the story are where all of these different Bookers interact. In another universe, he submits to baptism and is born again, giving away his old life and identity and becoming Booker 4, taking the new name Zachary Hale Comstock. In one case, he decides not to go ahead with the baptism and walks away, thus giving rise to Booker 3. It is Booker 2 who seeks absolution in baptism, but this event runs different ways in different parallel worlds. He has even carved his daughter's initials into the back of his hand as an act of contrition. Booker 2 is that same man years later, crippled by guilt after giving up Anna to settle his debts. Booker 1 is the washed up alcoholic whose wife has died in childbirth and who feels incapable of bringing up his newborn daughter Anna on his own. ![]() ![]() It helps to think of Booker DeWitt as four different characters. The Luteces, by the way, are the most important characters in the game, and Booker and Elizabeth are just pawns on their board. This is a story about time bending back on itself and forming a stable loop, and the lengths to which the Lutece twins have to go to in order to break that loop. With that out of the way, let's get started. I haven't read any other interpretations of the game's ending, so I am pretty much working in a vacuum. I haven't had the chance to replay the whole game yet, though I am well into my second play-through. I played Bioshock Infinite over a few days in a hotel room in Sydney.
